Digital Transformation of EHS and ESG Compliance in the Oil and Gas Sector

Introduction

A global oil and gas company faced escalating costs, fragmented systems, and limited access to assets due to data being distributed across consultants and siloed software. Over two decades, the company has partnered with Locus Technologies to centralize and unify its analytical, environmental, health, safety (EHS), and water data.

The result:

  • Simplified access to $50M+ in analytical data assets via Locus EIM
  • Displacement of entrenched, underperforming vendors
  • Global adoption of Locus Waste and Locus Water software
  • Enterprise-wide path for unified, cloud-based compliance management.

This journey illustrates how digital transformation in EHS/ESG is not only about tech adoption, but also about breaking free from outdated business models that hold organizations hostage to their own data.

Challenge: Data Scattered, Access Denied

In the early 2000s, the oil company was spending over $18M annually on analytical work in the U.S. alone. Yet:

  • Data was dispersed across multiple consulting firms.
  • Access delays were common, often requiring consultants to deliver basic datasets.
  • Costs were inflated; every data request triggered billable hours.
  • Usability was low; data often arrived in inconsistent, sometimes unusable formats.

This dependency model gave consultants revenue incentives to maintain control, leaving the oil company unable to act quickly on compliance and business needs.

APTIM chooses Locus EHS software to transform a $2.4 million/year waste disposal program for a large national retailer.

APTIM is a top ten environmental management firm tackling sustainability and resilience challenges for energy, waste, water, and other resources. The company provides integrated services and solutions to government agencies, commercial, industrial, and energy customers with complex and ambitious environmental objectives. By pairing its consultants with industry-leading technologies, APTIM delivers customized, cutting-edge solutions to each of its clients. Case in point: a national retail chain experienced recurring challenges with its waste program and engaged APTIM to identify and resolve the root causes.

Challenge

The environmental, health, and safety (EHS) department for a large, national retail chain had been self-managing the logistics, tracking, and reporting related to waste disposal for 850 stores in the US. The in-house team managed the relationships with waste haulers, scheduled and verified pickups, and responded to unforeseen waste overages at different stores. The retailer’s processes could not scale to the quantity of locations and variables, nor did their system provide reliable insights to respond to issues or optimize operations.

  • Dispersed stakeholders and disconnected data sources: The retailer’s waste program spans 850 locations and involves input from store managers, waste haulers, TSDF vendors, and EHS staff at the home office. There was no central database to manage the program or to store the quantitative and qualitative information collected…

GPC streamlines Clean Air Act Title V record keeping using Locus Platform

Grain Processing Corporation (GPC), a leading U.S. manufacturer of corn-based products, needed a smarter, more efficient tool to capture, track, notify, and report daily Clean Air Act Title V compliance parameters for numerous emission sources and points at their various production facilities.

GPC was using SharePoint to enter over 20 daily logs at two facilities and had to address several questions per log and per shift, throughout a two-shift day. Their system had no reporting or notifications, and there was no consistency between the forms in the system. The EHS manager would spend weeks searching through information to obtain the data needed for GPC’s annual Title V certification report and other reporting needs.

Solution

In order to simplify and standardize data collection and reporting, GPC selected Locus’ configurable Platform software solution. Locus Platform was selected based on its ability to be quickly configured to match existing business processes across operating facilities and easily implement the changes in permit recordkeeping requirements over time.

A dedicated project team at Locus and GPC identified improvements that could be made in Locus Platform from GPC’s existing internal “home-built” system that was not designed to meet the needs of demanding, ever-changing environmental compliance reporting. The collaborative team developed a comprehensive set of requirements that helped fast-track the project to a timely deployment that met or exceeded the GPC user community’s expectations.

Within six months, the new system was in daily use, and adoption by the remaining facility locations followed soon after.

Results

GPC was able to create a uniform business process across its Midwest facilities by using Locus Platform’s configurable data entry screens and flexible reporting dashboards. The focused reporting capabilities of the software made it easy for GPC to generate consistent, easy-to-read reports, so their EHS manager could now more quickly and reliably report compliance data.

The Locus Platform allowed iterative, streamlined configuration of data entry forms with built-in validation to match GPC’s specific business needs and nomenclature. By tailoring the forms and reports to the business, the GPC user community (comprised of users with very different needs and job responsibilities) found it easy to adopt the software and were able to provide actionable feedback during the configuration process.

The flexibility and ease of configuration, including standardized rules and validations, allowed GPC to streamline a previously cumbersome and error-prone process and gain user acceptance in record time.

One of the smartest decisions I made during my time at I wanted to take a moment to acknowledge the outstanding support Kent Corp/GPC has received from the Locus team assigned to our environmental compliance log project. The Locus Project team has been extremely patient and tolerant throughout the entire project. This team navigated their way through a multitude of decisions, changes to decisions, and even more requested changes from GPC with patience that must have been challenging at times.
