Vapor Intrusion

Locus Technologies is the industry leader and pioneer in vapor intrusion studies. Locus has direct hands-on experience with every available tool for evaluating, investigating, and mitigating vapor intrusion concerns. Locus vapor intrusion projects have ranged from simple site screenings to full-scale multi-phase investigations and remedy implementations, depending on the client's needs and concerns.

In 2005, Locus sponsored and co-chaired a Groundwater Resources Association (GRA) conference on the topic of Subsurface Intrusion to Indoor Air (www.grac.org). Locus authored three presentations at the GRA conference, which are available at the following links:

Optimized Solutions

Optimized vapor intrusion solutionsMethods of addressing vapor intrusion vary widely, and it is important to select the right approach before you begin. Locus starts most vapor intrusion investigations by obtaining information on the goals and stakeholders involved in the project. Locus can then design a project plan to meet your needs and satisfy the regulatory requirements.

Locus recognizes the reality that some sites pose a lesser risk to human health and the environment than pre-supposed by strict numeric standards or screening levels that are based on worst-case scenarios. Locus offers an experienced, multi-disciplinary professional staff to assist with vapor intrusion from investigation to remediation and monitoring. For field investigations addressing vapor intrusion, Locus has sampled and analyzed groundwater, soil, soil vapor, soil flux, and ambient air, all using approved regulatory standards. Our team of toxicologists, environmental and civil engineers, and risk assessors offer expertise in services such as investigation design, human health risk assessment, abatement and mitigation, and public communication activities.

Litigation Support

Another challenge posed with addressing vapor intrusion is the participation of several interested parties that may provide input to the process. Vapor intrusion projects often involve multiple regulatory agencies, building owners/occupants, and potentially responsible parties (PRPs). Locus has developed managerial approaches to streamline the often-conflicting objectives of these groups. In several cases, Locus has acted as the central recipient of information. While keeping close contact with the client and its representatives, this approach proved to reduce the client's overhead costs while, at the same time, arriving to a remedial solution acceptable to all parties involved.
